Thoughts on identity

As we meet more and more people here it becomes abundantly clear that there are mixed feelings about Taiwan's colonial history and its impact on modern day society. Some feel great reverance towards the impact that the Japanese had on the islands including providing a stable government, building infrastucture, schools, bridges, etc. Some feel a strong connection to mainland China. Many trace their roots to indigenous tribes that were here centuries before the Europeans. And the majority understandably don't want to express their opinions with people they only met 2 hours ago. Now the one thing that we can all agree to disagree on is how to count to 10 using your fingers. For whatever reason this has become a fascination of ours. Many people will begin counting with their index finger, then add the middle, ring, and pinky to get up to 4. No confusion yet. Then tricky #5 gets in the way. Is it a balled up fist or all 5 fingers?!!!! In what many would believe a relativly simple answer, I think it's probably best at this point to once and for all solve this dilemma either through a national referendum or a UN resolution. Hopefully they don't disagree on the number of the resolution. On one hand, no pun intended, balling up your fist is brilliant! It always to potentially count all the way to 10 on 1 hand which in turn opens up a plethora of opportunity to continue counting on your other hand all the way to 100! Trust me, it's possible. Now on the other hand, yes that's still the first hand, you can use the pinky and thumb to indicate 6, point a gun towards the floor for 7, 3 fingers down is 8, 4 down is 9 and ten can either be all 5 fingers or making an X with both index fingers. Can you see how this causes issues? One thing that we can all agree on is that before you get your picture taken someone will yell out.....EE, Ur, San! (1, 2, 3 Smile!)
